The link between nephrology and clinical chemistry is essential. Indeed, nephrologists daily rely on results provided by clinical laboratories for diagnostic, treatment and follow-up purposes. Yet, international guidelines, like KDIGO aim at improving patient’s care and many part of these guidelines rely on various biomarkers assessment. In a few words, this means that these guidelines are often based on the assumption that the results provided by the different laboratories in the world are comparable. Different efforts have thus been undertaken by the laboratory community and IVD manufacturers to improve standardization of various assays. This has recently been the case with creatinine (SCr) and cystatin C (CysC) and even if things are not perfect, an improvement in standardization of both assays can be observed, at least in most of the European countries. An international detailed survey has been performed by the former TFG-CKD (chaired by Vanja Radisic) and the results still need to be published.
Recently, new opportunities and challenges have emerged requiring close collaboration between lab clinicians and nephrologists on the European level.
